Cardiac PET Scan

A cardiac PET scan (Positron Emission Tomography) is a noninvasive imaging test that uses a safe amount of injectable radioactive chemical called a radiotracer and advanced technology to create extremely detailed pictures of your heart. PET scans are more accurate than other stress tests and especially beneficial for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and other heart conditions.

A PET Scan allows us to:

• Assess blood flow between the coronary arteries and the heart muscle
• Precisely detect areas of reduced blood supply
• Evaluate heart muscle function
• Detect early stages of plaque buildup in the arteries or worsening condition
• Identify damage from a prior heart attack
• Assess if a patient is suitable for procedures like angioplasty or bypass surgery
• Monitor the effectiveness of treatment for heart disease over time

• Prior to your visit, avoid caffeine 24 hours before the scan.
• The test is safe and painless. You’ll receive a small injection (IV line) of tracer, which travels through your bloodstream, and wait 30–60 minutes while it circulates through your body.
• During the scan, you’ll lie still on a table while the PET scanner captures images.
• The procedure typically takes about 30–60 minutes.
• Expect the entire process to take roughly 2–3 hours.
